Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel Elmer A. Dean, Medical Corps: Army Distinguished Service Medal, numbered “1767″. Reribboned.

Colonel Dean received the DSM in War Department General Orders No. 89 (1919): “He came to France with a base hospital unit, which he established. Later he organized and commanded the first large hospital center at Bazoilles. The success of this center in caring for a large number of sick and wounded was due in a large measure to his high professional attainments, zeal and extraordinary executive ability.” The base hospital referenced in the citation was Base Hospital No. 30, organized at the University of California. Col Dean also received Philippine Campaign Medal “1002″ and Mexican Border Service Medal “14056″ (locations unknown). Col Dean was born in Tennessee in August 1871 and died in December 1965. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
