Richard J. Donnelly was appointed a first lieutenant in the Spanish-American War, serving in the 1st DC Infantry. During World War I, he served at Fort Dix until he went to France in May 1918 as a major. He remained in the Officers Reserve Corps after the war, rising to lieutenant colonel and retiring in 1932. He was a civilian employee of the War Department. Donnelly died in December 1933 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
