Private Matthew Mahoney was born in the Parish of Bruff, Limerick, Ireland. He attested to the 86th Regiment in September 1859. He appears in the regimental defaulters book 16 times and was convicted by court-martial on four occasions. He volunteered for service with the 13th Foot in 1875. Mahoney completed 21 years of service and was discharged at his own request in 1879.
