In March 1936, after several days of steady rains and warm weather, run-off from snow melt and rains converged to put the city of Johnstown under about 17 feet of water. To deal with the disaster, the governor mobilized about 1850 men of the National Guard. Over $40 million worth of damage was sustained and 25 people lost their lives.
