John Edwards enlisted in November 1915, but his call-up was delayed until June 1916, when he was assigned to the Royal Engineers Signal Service for training as a switchboard operator. In October 1918, Edwards was assigned to Syren Signal Company, RE, and sent to Murmansk, North Russia, where he served until the autumn of 1919. He was demobilized in October 1919, receiving the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
