William Duncan Robinson enlisted in August 1940. In December, 1941, he reported aboard USS Long Island (CVE-1). The ship was used to train carrier pilots and ferrying aircraft, initially in the Atlantic and then in the Pacific. She participated in operations at Guadalcanal.
