Military Medal, GV (29443 Cpl E. Gallagher, 16/Can: Inf:).

Edward Gallagher attested into the 16th Canadian Infantry (Canadian Scottish) in September 1914.  Born in 1890 in Nottingham, England, he noted previous service in the Notts and Derbys. Going to France in February 1915, he was wounded twice (2 May 1915 and 20 August 1917). Gallagher was convicted by courtmartial and sentenced to six months at hard labor, but the sentence was suspended “on account of hard work and good behavior Pte Gallagher has been promoted Lance Corporal and his services and leadership especially during the operations of 9th/10th April 1917 [Vimy Ridge] have been excellent and of the greatest value to his battalion.”  Gallagher’s Military Medal was announced in the London Gazette of 19 November 1917. Gallagher died in June 1971
