Boston Latin School, founded in 1635, is the oldest public school in the United States. The school’s cadet corps was established during the Civil War to provide basic military training to students and continued as part of the curriculum until the early 1960s. “Prize Drill”, an annual event in May, became the high point of the year for cadets.
