Indiana. Roby Riots Medal. Marked “Childs/Chicago” on the reverse of the top bar. Verdigris spots and darkening.

In 1893, an illegal prizefight was scheduled in Roby, Indiana, .  A troop of the Indiana Legion, forerunner of the Indiana National Guard, was called out to apprehend the promoters and restore order to the area. In 1894, the Indiana Legion was called out in force to deal with the effects of the Pullman Railcar strike in Chicago, which had spread labor violence through the area. The Roby family struck and presented these medals to recognize the troops who participated in the call-ups.
