SSgt Bruce T. Canady, who was from Texas, was assigned to the 17th Pursuit Squadron, 24th Pursuit Group, in the Philippines. After the US surrender, Canady was sent to the prison camp at Cabanatuan. In October 1944, Canady was placed aboard Arisan Maru, a freighter used to transport American prisoners from Manila to Japan, China and Manchuria. The ship was loaded with 1781 prisoners of war when it was torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine, USS Shark, on 24 October 1944. Canady was among the fatal casualties. He is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in Manila.
