Corporal Schienmann, who was born in Germany, enlisted in New York City on 30 September 1942. He was assigned to the 1327th Army Air Forces Base Unit at Tezpur, Assam, India. He was flight engineer aboard a C-87 “Liberator Express” (a cargo variant of the B-24 bomber) when it was reported missing on a flight from Hsinching, China back to Tezpur. Schienmann is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery, Philippines, with a death date of 25 September 1945.
Casualty estimates vary for “over the Hump” operations but seem to be around 590 aircraft and 1300 crewmen lost.
