South Africa Medal, clasp “1879″ (1406 Lce Sergt W. Herbert, 1st Dgn Gds). Edge wear over the naming, which remains legible. Herbert is confirmed on the roll for this medal and clasp. The roll notes that he was engaged against the Zulus in 1879. Herbert also received the Egypt Medal, clasp “Tel-El-Kebir” and the Khedive’s Star (locations unknown)..

While the 1st Dragoon Guards were primarily used in reconnaissance, scouting and escort roles, they were also involved in the pursuit of the defeated Zulus after the Battle of Ulundi in 1879. There were 641 medals with this clasp awarded to the regiment.
