Captain Schroeder was born in Buffalo, New York, in December 1930 and was a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy, Class of 1954, where he was captain of the wrestling team. As a junior officer he taught at the Academy and served at the Coast Guard Training Center, Yorktown, Virginia. In 1971, Commander Schroeder took command of USCGC Durable, homeported in Brownsville, Texas. After only a short period there, he moved to be assistant chief of training and procurement at Coast Guard Headquarters. By 1980, Schroeder was a captain heading the Administrative Services Division in Coast Guard Headquarters. Captain Schroeder retired in July 1984. He does not appear in the 2020 Coast Guard Register of Retired Officers.
