Silver Star (A2c Shubbuck, USAF; KIA Vietnam)

Silver Star, slot brooch, machine-engraved “Rolland B. Shubbuck”. With a Medina, NY, news clipping relating to his death in Vietnam on 16 January 1966 at Trung Lap, while serving as a ROMAD (Radio Operator, Maintainer and Driver) with Det 1, 507th Direct Air Support Squadron while providing close air support to the 1st Infantry Division. Plus, copied St. Louis service record data (St. Louis notes indicate that no award citations were in the file).

Airman Second Class (E-3) Shubbuck had joined the Air Force in July 1962 and trained in ground radio communications. He served with the forward air controllers attached to the 4th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington, from January 1964 through July 1965. In 1965, he was assigned to the 507th Direct Air Support Squadron, Shaw AFC, South Carolina. From there, he deployed to Vietnam, providing close air support to units of the 1st Infantry Division around the Vietnamese Ranger outpost at Trung Lap (near Cu Chi). Shubbuck also received the Bronze Star, with “V” device and Purple Heart. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
