The 6th Regiment was raised in December 1861 for railroad guard duty. The regiment lost 8 men in action and another 169 to disease. Muster rolls record “Matthew M. Butcher” and “Matthew W. Butcher” in the 6th West Virginia Infantry, but a grave marker in Burton, West Virginia, shows “Matthew Harmon Butcher” (1839-1897).
