Uruguay. Campaign Against Paraguay, 1865-1869, with silver sun suspension (for officers).
The War of the Triple Alliance pitted Uruguay against the combined armies of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. After a conventional war ran its course, guerilla warfare ensued, lasting for over a year. The result was complete devastation for Uruguay, which lost over half of its population. Uruguay’s female-to-male ration after the war was about 4-to-1. The effects were felt well into the 20th Century.
