Johnson enlisted in the Navy in 1934. In 1941-43, he served aboard USS Pocomoke, a seaplane tender, and USS Kaweah, a fleet replenishment oiler. After shore assignments in New York and Washington, DC, he moved to the US Naval Liaison Office in Calcutta, India and was later part the occupation forces in Okinawa. By 1951, he was a lieutenant commander, Supply Corps, with Fleet Air Wing 14 in San Diego. Johnson retired in 1962 as a commander.
